It was insanely windy and pouring rain. I was going ten miles under the speed limit already, and as I was pulling into the turning lane where a truck was already waiting, I coasted and pumped my brakes. Still, it was obvious we were approaching far too quickly. I panicked and slammed the brakes.

I was going no more than 10mph at the point of impact. My boyfriend and I lunged out of our seats no more than if I had slammed the brakes. The truck was an '02 Ford Sports Trac. It didn't have a scratch. The man driving it was very nice, (hopefully.) He said he won't call it in because there was nothing apparently wrong with his truck (I smashed into/under his rear bumper.) My hood, however, crumpled. It's amazing how totaled the front of my car is, considering how slow we were going.

He's an Intelligence Specialist for the Department of Defense. So I hope that means he's pretty well off and won't bother with it. He did seem nice, but I keep worrying he'll get home and see something different in the light and decide to call it in.

Regardless, I'm really fucking pissed and upset and I don't know what else. If I had done something wrong... if there was something for which I could feel guilty, I don't think I'd feel as bad, honestly. It's this feeling of abyss-like helpessness that's irritating me. The fact that I did everything I could and was so very careful, and in the end it couldn't help me avoid something like this.

I'm glad everyone is okay, though. Glad is the understatement of the year.

I really hoped I'd never get into an accident, as naive as that sounds.

I hit a fucking stupid Sunfire the other day, barely dinged it but those cars are pieces of shit. Cost me $170 to settle privately.

Hey, say what you want about my Geo, but that car can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'! It's got so many dings on it, I consider each a badge of honour.

But shit! One little bump on a Sunfire and it needs a whole new goddamn bumper practically!

That happened to me once. I hit someone and my car went under hers and my hood crumpled and had a lot of damage but her car had only small scratches.

defense department intelligence specialist? don't accept any packages or home delivered pizzas for a few weeks, and don't use you phone. and maybe make one of those foil hats.
UberRyan
UberRyan on Sep 28 '06 at 10:53pm
if he

legally, you're off the hook.

-He didn't call it in

-There was no citation

-There was no eye witness

-There was no police officer to take down names, and details

-Insurance companies were not called, nor was a claim made at the time, then hes SOL

I mean maybe he could do something, but that all depends on how much info he has from you. Name, address, etc etc

It however could not be proven that you even hit him to begin with.

when driving in the rain... especially if it has not rained for awhile before the current rain. take extreme care... rain after a long period of no rain tends to bring a lot of oil that has collected on the roads up.

said oil makes things quite slippery indeed.

that said.... as a young man I slid a volkswagen jetta off the pavement and over a sidewalk then down an embankment in the rain.

shit happens..... especially if you are 16 driving a Jetta GLI in the rain at 50 thru a tight curve...

ooooooops... man that car was fucked up after that.

my parents were thrilled indeed.

hitting a truck or bigger SUV in a car tends to do a bunch of damage to the car because the truck or SUVs bumper is so far off the ground that rather than bumper to bumper contact the car goes under the trucks bumper.
Stevethegreat
Stevethegreat on Sep 28 '06 at 11:08pm
my friend's dad was basically decapitated when he rear-ended a big truck because of the way the bumpers were in relation to one another

front ends are meant to crumple though, they aren't as resiliant

in a major accident said fragile front end could save your life.
